Jilin University has a comparatively long history
in pursuing studies on Northeast Asia. As early as in 1964,
it established Japanese Studies Section and Korean Studies Section
under the approval of the Ministry of Education. In the 1980's,
it set up Institutes of Japanese Studies, Population Research,
Russia Studies and Korean Studies successively. In 1994, Jilin
University decided to merge its Institutes of Japanese Studies,
Population Research, Russian Studies, North and South Korean
Studies, International Development of Tumen River Area, and
Regional Economy to form the Academy of Northeast Asia Studies
for the purpose of meeting the needs of the Reform and Opening
up policy in China and following the development of regional
economic cooperation in Northeast Asia, Jilin University has
since then been able to achieve an interdisciplinary and comprehensive
research on the politics, economy, history and culture of Northeast
Asia. In 1997, the project "Research on the Regional Economic,
Historical and Social Development of Northeast Asia," mainly
undertaken by the Academy of Northeast Asian Studies, was designated
by the State as one of the key programs to receive special support
in the "211 project". In October 1999, the Center
for Northeast Asian Studies of Jilin University was formally
established relying on the Academy of Northeast Asian Studies
and some researchers engaged from Jilin University and other
institutions in the fields of World Economic, International
Politics, and History of Northeast Asia. In December 1999, this
center was designated by the Ministry of Education as one of
the first 15 national key research bases in humanities and social
sciences in China.
